JERASH
In the Afternoon the group will have only a one hour and a half
drive from the Dead Sea going up from below sea level to Amman
and then heading North of Amman to see the Roman city of Jerash
(Gerasa in ancient times). This ancient city of Jerash is
remarkable for its unbroken chain of human occupation. At a well
– watered site in the hills of Gilead, one will find remains
from Neolithic times, as well as Greek, Roman, Byzantine,
Umayyad and others. Jerash's golden age, however, arrived with
Roman rule, and today it is acknowledged as one of the best
preserved Roman provincial towns in the world. One can walk
beneath four imposing gates, or down the "Street of Columns"
North from the Oval Plaza while stepping over the tracks of
chariot wheels still visible in the paving stones.
