MOUNT NEBO & MADABA
The focus of a visit to Mount Nebo is the Moses Memorial Church,
which stands on the mountain-top. The first structure on this
site may have dated from classical times, but by 394 AD it had
been converted into a triapsidal church floored with mosaics.
Major expansion work was undertaken during the 6th century, and
over the subsequent centuries the building was added to until it
became the focus for a large and flourishing monastic community;
the monastery is known to have been still thriving in 1217, but
by 1564 it had been abandoned. In 1933, the ruined site was
purchased by Franciscans, who began excavating and restoring the
church and the surrounding area. Today, the site remains both a
monastic refuge and the headquarters of the active Franciscan
Archeological Institute.
After the visit drive 10 minutes to Madaba, where the oldest map
of the Holy Land exists on the floor of Saint George’s Church.
Madaba, or Medeba in antiquity, features many famous mosaics
that exist in public and private buildings.
